 Horse-Drawn Hearse

One of the most common symbols of a funeral procession is the hearse. Today it is a standard piece of equipment needed to transport the casket from the funeral home to the burial site. However, this was not always the case. The first time a hearse on wheels was documented as being used in a funeral procession was in 1648 for the burial of Colonel Rainsborowe during the English Civil War. Later, horse-drawn hearses were known to be in use in New England and the Middle Colony towns before the Revolutionary War. Only wealthy families could afford such extravagant service.

From Revolutionary times until the Civil War, domestic carriage makers manufactured hearses on the side.

Both the popularity and affordability of hearse drawn services increased after the outbreak of the Civil War. Then as now, fashion and style were important components to society and the design and quality of hearses changed. Deck ornaments replaced the plumes and emblems that were once used, and which originally waved from the top of urns were placed upon the body. Smooth, undecorated tops came into favor for horse drawn hearses.

 1938 Buick Limited

This is a 1938 Buick Limited (Model 90), an 8 passenger 4 door touring sedan. It is one of the top of the line cars of the 1930’s and one of the great interests to old car enthusiasts. The limited is a very rare vehicle because of its low number production. Buick only produced 644 of this model in 1938. It has a 320 cu. in. straight 8 engine and a 3 speed transmission on the floor. It also has a little over 2 foot of leg room for the rear passenger’s comfort. This is a great and elegant road car, and it catches many eyes and gets “Thumbs Up “everywhere. It is a fun car to own, drive and enjoy.

Matthew Grieco and his father Charles are approximately the 4th family to own the car, having purchased it at the Hershey Car show in 2005. A full restoration reportedly occurred in the 1980s. The car was originally owned by a funeral home in Baltimore Maryland. Today, it is once again recognized as a symbol of pride and excellence at Grieco Family Funeral Homes. It is often used for car enthusiasts during funeral processions, or in any of 15 parades in the Chester County PA or New Castle County DE areas.
